freedom by joining the struggle for freedom elsewhere.

Japanese imperialism is now a contagious disease in its

most deadly form. It cannot spread in China without

infecting every other free nation, closing the doors

particularly against the future of youth. Therefore

the struggle of our Chinese youth is likewise the

struggle of the fraternity of youth throughout all the

countries of the earth.

We have been heartened by your fervour, your

earnestness, your serious concern for the betterment

of your own countries, and by your intelligent under-

standing of events and problems of your own and other

lands. The growing unity and consciousness of youth

in China and in all countries proves your incalculable

power to achieve whatever you desire. Within your

grasp, in your own time, lie opportunities of strength

through international co-operation greater than those

bestowed upon any previous generation. And I know

that youth can and will bravely and wisely shoulder

these new responsibilities; that youth can and will

carry forward the torch of human progress; and that

youth can and will build a better world. That is my

faith, and in China I am proud to have seen it

repeatedly proved true. Older men die, grown weary and hesitant with the passing of years. But the everlasting

resurgence of youthful blood courses through the body

of old China and eternally renews her vigor, her

courage and her hope. And it is to the younger generation of our leaders today that China owes the strength and

vitality of the resistance we have made, and which will
